Software installation and wiring

What you need

Have these ready before you start:

  • An Allen-Bradley PowerFlex 525 (V5.001 or newer)
  • A laptop with Connected Components Workbench (CCW) installed
  • An Ethernet cable
  • The One Motion technical data sheet for your part number

Download CCW

Connected Components Workbench (CCW) is the software that configures the PowerFlex 525. To get it:

  1. Visit the Rockwell Automation website (opens in a new tab).
  2. Create or sign in to an Allen-Bradley account.
  3. Go to the software downloads and choose the latest CCW version.
  4. Follow the installation prompts.
  5. Contact Allen-Bradley Support if anything goes wrong during installation.

Wire the PowerFlex 525

Correct wiring is critical for safe, reliable operation. Follow Allen-Bradley’s official PowerFlex 525 manuals:

If a link doesn’t open, search for “PowerFlex 525” on the Rockwell Automation website or contact their support.

Network setup

Setting up the PowerFlex 525 for Ethernet means giving it a static IP address (for example 192.168.1.71, subnet mask 255.255.255.0):

  1. Open CCW and connect to the PowerFlex 525.
  2. Set parameter C128 to 1 (Static IP).
  3. Set the IP address parameters: C129 = 192, C130 = 168, C131 = 1, C132 = 71.
  4. Set the subnet mask parameters: C133 = 255, C134 = 255, C135 = 255, C136 = 0.
  5. Power cycle the PowerFlex 525 to apply the changes.
  6. Check parameters C128–C136. If they haven’t changed, repeat the steps.
  7. Connect your computer to the PowerFlex 525 with an Ethernet cable.
  8. Configure your computer’s Ethernet settings (on Windows 11, search “Ethernet settings” in the Start menu).
  9. Test the connection by running ping 192.168.1.71 in a command prompt. Look for “Reply from 192.168.1.71”.

Note: follow your organization’s IT policies for network setup. Contact Allen-Bradley Support if connection problems continue.

Initial parameter setup

Parameters

Set the PowerFlex 525 parameters from your One Motion product data sheet, using CCW. To request a data sheet or part information, contact Technical Support.

Auto-tuning

Auto-tuning optimizes performance by adjusting the dynamic parameters:

  1. In CCW, set P040 to 2 (Rotate Tune).
  2. Disconnect all mechanical loads, such as belts or pulleys.
  3. Press the green button on the PowerFlex 525 to start auto-tuning.
  4. When tuning finishes, check the values of P484 and P485.
  5. If auto-tuning fails with a fault, set P484/P485 to full load amps + 1.0 A, increase by 0.2 A if needed, and try again.
  6. Once auto-tuning succeeds, reconnect the drive to its load.

Note: auto-tuning may cause vibration, and it adjusts parameters such as A501–A504 (PM IR Voltage, IXd/IXq Voltage, BEMF Voltage).

Troubleshooting parameters

Use these parameters to diagnose and fix common issues with One Motion PM drives. Adjust in small steps to avoid damage.

ParameterNameWhen to checkAction
B003Output CurrentVerify against expected continuous and maximum currentNone (read-only)
A516PM Initial SelectionThe drive drifts on startSet to 1 (HFI)
A531Start BoostThe drive fails to startIncrease by 1%
A532Break VoltageSlip or overload on startReduce by 5% for faults, increase by 1% for slipping
A533Break FrequencySlip under shock loadingIncrease by 1 Hz
A581PM Stable 1 FreqSpeed fluctuationsIncrease by 2
A587/A588PM EfficiencyCyclic current fluctuationsSet to 1900%
P041Accel TimeOverload on startIncrease by 2–5 seconds
P042Decel TimeOvervoltage on stopIncrease by 2–5 seconds

Tip: test after each parameter change to see its effect, and write down what you changed.

Note: make adjustments in small steps, and see Allen-Bradley’s PM control documentation for detailed guidance.

Frequently asked questions

Quick fixes for issues that come up during setup and operation:

  • The drive drifts on start: set A516 to 1 (HFI) to correct roll-back or roll-forward.
  • The drive stalls: increase A531 (Start Boost) by 1% at a time until it starts reliably.
  • Overload fault on start: increase P041 (Accel Time) by 2–5 seconds, or adjust A532 (Break Voltage) by ±5%.
  • Speed fluctuations: increase A581 (PM Stable 1 Freq) by 2 to smooth the VFD output.
  • Overvoltage fault on stop: increase P042 (Decel Time) by 2–5 seconds.
  • Cyclic current fluctuations: set A587/A588 (PM Efficiency) to 1900% to stabilize current.
